Aboard Etihads Inaugural A321LR: A Unique Journey to Abu Dhabi
Embarking on a journey from Hamburg, Germany, to Abu Dhabi on Etihad’s brand-new Airbus A321LR was an experience unlike any other. Just two days before the flight, I received an unusual email reminder stating, “Alcoholic beverages will not be accepted in either carry-on or checked baggage for this flight.” This was a first in my extensive travel history of over 1,000 flights. While I had hoped to bring some celebratory bubbly, the excitement surrounding this delivery flight more than made up for it. As we soared into the skies, we eventually toasted with Champagne, celebrating a significant milestone for the airline.
Etihad is set to introduce its Airbus A321LR, a long-range aircraft that promises to enhance the narrow-body flying experience. This jet is particularly noteworthy as it is the airline’s first single-aisle plane to feature lie-flat pods in both its first and business class sections. With an increased range of about 1,000 miles compared to the airline’s existing A320 family, this aircraft opens the door to new routes and deployment opportunities.
Before the A321LR could officially debut on its commercial flight to Phuket, Thailand, on August 1, it needed to make its way from Hamburg to Abu Dhabi. Rather than a simple delivery flight with minimal staff, Etihad opted for a celebratory event, inviting select media, employees, and contractors to join the journey. I was fortunate enough to be among those invited, and the experience was truly one-of-a-kind.
The flight, designated Etihad Flight 3210 in homage to the Airbus A321LR, was scheduled to depart from Airbus’ Hamburg manufacturing facility at 10 a.m. local time. Much like a commercial flight, we arrived nearly two hours prior to departure, but instead of a bustling terminal, we arrived at building 110, the charter building at Airbus headquarters.
After a slow security process—likely due to the unique regulations for this flight—we finally made our way to the aircraft. The A321LR, registered as A6-LRA, awaited us, glistening under the morning sun. Boarding was a straightforward affair, with no jet bridges or buses needed; we simply walked to the plane, pausing to capture photos along the way.
Upon entering the aircraft, we were greeted by Turky Alhammadi, Etihad’s director of product. The anticipation was palpable, as many of the passengers had attended the previous day’s delivery ceremony and were eager to explore the new cabin designs. The airline had gone above and beyond to customize the flight experience, collaborating with a local Abu Dhabi artist to create a vibrant painting of the A321LR flying over iconic city skylines. This artwork adorned menus, Wi-Fi vouchers, and even a commemorative tote bag provided to each passenger.
In addition to these special touches, first and business class passengers were treated to luxurious amenities, including an Armani Casa-branded amenity kit, pillow, duvet, mattress pad, and slippers. As I settled into my seat, I took time to explore the first-class suite, which featured ample space and a buddy seat for dining with a companion. The privacy offered by sliding doors created a serene atmosphere, making it easy to unwind.
While the first-class product was impressive, I was equally amazed by the business class offering. The customized Stelia Opera seat provided a level of comfort that rivaled many wide-body aircraft. The open footwell made it easy to relax and sleep, while the expansive tray table allowed for comfortable dining and working.
Despite some limitations, such as the lack of enclosed storage and sliding doors in business class, the overall experience was exceptional. Each seat came equipped with a 4K TV, Bluetooth capability, and multiple charging options, ensuring passengers remained connected throughout the flight. The Wi-Fi, provided by Viasat, offered streaming-quality speeds, making it easy to stay entertained.
As we took off, cheers and applause filled the cabin. The crew, consisting of five members, promptly served canapés and mocktails to set the celebratory mood before launching into an exquisite four-course lunch. The meal featured signature dishes, including Arabic mezze and seabass, leaving me thoroughly satisfied.
After a brief nap, I awoke as we were flying over Iraq, with the softening light signaling our approach to Abu Dhabi. Upon landing on runway 31L, we taxied towards the old terminal rather than the new one, eventually pulling up to a private VIP terminal. Deplaning via air stairs adorned with a red carpet added a touch of glamour to the occasion.
Inside the VIP terminal, we were greeted by a jubilant crowd of Etihad employees and executives. Short speeches followed, celebrating the successful delivery flight while a cleaning crew prepared the aircraft for its next journey. As I bid farewell to the A321LR, I felt a sense of gratitude for the unique opportunity to be part of this momentous occasion.
Traveling on Etihad’s inaugural A321LR was an unforgettable experience that showcased the airline’s commitment to enhancing the flying experience. With its advanced features and luxurious offerings, this aircraft is poised to redefine narrow-body travel and open new horizons for Etihad and its passengers. As I ventured into the Abu Dhabi heat, I couldn’t help but hope for another chance to fly on this remarkable aircraft in the future.
