American Airlines Expands Latin America Routes for Winter Travel

American Airlines is set to offer winter-weary travelers a chance to escape to warmer destinations this year with the introduction of three new routes across Latin America. The Fort Worth-based airline announced these exciting additions this week, aiming to enhance travel options for those looking to bask in the sun during the colder months.

Starting October 26, American will launch daily flights from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX). Additionally, during the peak holiday season from December 18, 2025, to January 5, 2026, the airline will operate select flights from Chicago to Queretaro International Airport (QRO). Furthermore, travelers from Philadelphia will also benefit from a new daily service to Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport (SDQ), which will commence on December 18.

This expansion is part of a broader increase in holiday service across Latin America, with American Airlines set to operate more than 2.3 million round-trip seats during the festive season—an impressive one million more than its nearest competitor. The airline is enhancing its service from Philadelphia with three additional routes, and from Miami International Airport (MIA), its primary gateway to Latin America, with eight new routes.

The new flights are expected to attract not only vacationers seeking a winter getaway but also those visiting friends and relatives (VFR) during the holiday season. The demand for travel to Latin America is high, particularly as families look to reunite for the holidays.

Interestingly, American Airlines’ expansion coincides with similar moves by its competitors. Delta Air Lines has announced its inaugural flights from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) to Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) in Lima, Peru, starting December 4. Meanwhile, United Airlines is ramping up its service with new routes from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Denver International Airport (DEN) to various destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Despite the increasing competition, American Airlines maintains its position as the leading U.S. airline in service to Latin America. José Freig, the airline’s vice president of international operations, emphasized this commitment, stating, “As the leading U.S. airline in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America, we’re focused on growing our network and providing our customers access to their favorite destinations in the region. With these new routes and additional flying, next winter we’ll operate 10% more seats than the previous year, demonstrating our dedication to the region and our customers.”

Travelers eager to book these new flights can purchase tickets starting July 14 through all of American Airlines’ sales channels. This expansion not only reflects American Airlines’ commitment to enhancing travel options but also underscores the growing demand for travel to Latin America, especially during the winter months.

For those planning their winter escapes, this is an excellent opportunity to explore vibrant cities and beautiful beaches in Latin America. Whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in the rich culture of Mexico City, enjoy the sunny shores of the Dominican Republic, or visit family and friends, American Airlines is paving the way for unforgettable travel experiences this winter season.
