After years of anticipation, the moment has finally arrived: Amtrak’s next-generation Acela train is set to revolutionize rail travel in the United States. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 mph, this sleek new model will primarily service the Northeast Corridor, connecting major cities from Boston to Washington, D.C. The trainsets, delivered in 2020, have been patiently waiting for the completion of testing and certification before making their long-awaited debut.

On Thursday, Amtrak marked a significant milestone as the first of these modern trainsets entered revenue service, signaling the end of a decade-long journey to enhance rail travel in America. The new Acela promises to deliver a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience, and I had the opportunity to ride the inaugural journey from Washington, D.C., to Boston, starting my trip at New York’s Moynihan Train Hall.

The first-class experience begins immediately upon boarding, with the train’s modern livery showcasing a vibrant update of Acela’s iconic branding. Initially, Amtrak will roll out five of the 28 new Alstom-built trains, with plans to gradually introduce more trains until 2027, as the older Acela models are phased out. While the seat pitch is slightly reduced compared to first class, the amenities remain consistent, with AC power outlets and USB ports available at each seat.
