Discover Etihads Game-Changing Airbus A321LR Experience
Etihad Airways is ushering in a new era for its medium-haul network with the introduction of the highly anticipated Airbus A321LR. This long-range aircraft is set to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers flying to and from the airline’s hub in Abu Dhabi, Zayed International Airport (AUH).
The A321LR stands out as the first single-aisle jet in Etihad’s fleet to feature a dedicated first-class product, complete with lie-flat pods in the business-class cabin. This aircraft not only elevates the comfort and luxury of medium-haul flights but also expands Etihad’s reach to new destinations that were previously inaccessible with smaller planes or lacked the demand for larger twin-aisle jets. With a range of approximately 1,000 miles more than standard A321s, the A321LR opens up exciting travel possibilities.
In anticipation of the jet’s inaugural flight on August 1, I visited the Airbus manufacturing facility in Hamburg, Germany, to get an exclusive first look at the aircraft and join the delivery flight to Abu Dhabi. Here’s everything you need to know about the A321LR and why it’s a significant development for Etihad Airways.
The highlight of the A321LR is undoubtedly its all-new first-class product, located in the bulkhead row at the front of the aircraft. This cabin features two first-class suites arranged in a 1-1 configuration, providing an intimate and luxurious travel experience. Each suite boasts 22.5-inch-wide seats, 20-inch 4K TVs, a buddy seat for dining with a companion, Bluetooth audio connectivity, and Qi wireless charging capabilities. The inclusion of sliding doors ensures additional privacy for passengers.
The design of these seats maximizes comfort, with ample storage space and a spacious ottoman and footwell area made possible by the aircraft’s curvature. When converted into bed mode, the seats offer generous dimensions, although proximity to the galley and lavatory may be a minor inconvenience during peak times.
Frequent flyers, particularly those based in the U.S., may recognize these seats as comparable to “business-class-plus” offerings from other airlines, such as American’s Flagship Suite Preferred or JetBlue’s Mint Studio. While there are no dividers between the first-class suites and the business-class section, Etihad aims to elevate the overall experience with personalized service, exquisite meals, and premium beverage options, ensuring that travelers enjoy a seamless transition from long-haul flights to the A321LR.
The business-class cabin, located behind first class, features 14 pods in a 1-1 configuration, designed with a reverse herringbone layout that maximizes privacy. Etihad has opted for a customized version of the Stelia Opera seat, which converts into a lie-flat bed measuring 78 inches in length. An open footwell area enhances comfort during sleep, while the tray tables, measuring 20 inches long and 15.5 inches wide, provide ample space for dining and working.
Each business-class pod is equipped with a 17.3-inch 4K TV, Bluetooth audio connectivity, Qi wireless charging pads, USB-C and USB-A ports, and a universal power outlet. The cabin’s design features muted tones with luxurious gold accents, creating an elegant atmosphere. However, it’s worth noting that there is only one lavatory shared between first-class and business-class passengers, which may lead to lines during busy periods.
For those traveling in economy, the A321LR offers 144 seats, including six rows with extra legroom (34 inches of pitch) and the remainder with 30 inches of pitch. All seats are 18.4 inches wide and recline 5 inches. While row 29 lacks windows and row 28 has a misaligned window due to a sealed exit door, the economy cabin still provides a pleasant flying experience. For the best legroom, I would recommend selecting exit row 19, as the seats in row 18 do not recline.
Etihad has made efforts to give the economy experience a premium feel, with each seat featuring 13.3-inch 4K monitors and USB-A and USB-C charging ports. However, the absence of power outlets in economy is a notable drawback. The cabin is enhanced by mood lighting strips, although it lacks the signature Airbus overhead lights seen on similar jets operated by other airlines. Thankfully, the A321LR is equipped with oversized overhead bins, ensuring ample space for carry-on luggage.
The aircraft is also connected to Viasat’s satellite Wi-Fi service, promising high-speed internet access during flights. As Etihad prepares to deploy its A321LR, the airline plans to receive a total of 10 units by the end of the year, with 30 on order. These jets will be utilized on routes to exciting destinations such as Thailand, the Seychelles, and Paris.
The strategic deployment of the A321LR will allow Etihad to introduce first-class and business-class offerings to markets that may not yet support the capacity of a wide-body aircraft. This includes destinations like Chiang Mai, Thailand, and Algiers, Algeria. Additionally, the A321LR will serve shorter routes within a four-hour radius of Abu Dhabi that require a premium product, such as the Seychelles, and will increase frequency in select business markets, like Paris.
As Etihad continues to roll out this impressive aircraft, it is clear that the A321LR is a significant advancement for the airline, offering modern amenities and tech-forward enhancements that rival some of its wide-body jets. The upgrades in both first and business class promise a luxurious experience for travelers, while the economy cabin aims to provide a comfortable journey.
While some passengers may miss the experience of flying on larger aircraft for longer journeys, the A321LR presents an exciting option for medium-haul flights. Personally, I look forward to experiencing the comforts of the first-class cabin, complete with a glass of Champagne and the luxury of a lie-flat bed.
In summary, Etihad’s Airbus A321LR is a game-changer for the airline, enhancing its service offerings and expanding its route capabilities. Whether you’re traveling in first class, business class, or economy, this aircraft promises a memorable flying experience. Stay tuned for more updates as Etihad continues to unveil its new routes and services with the A321LR.
