New Redemption Option for AAdvantage Members: Fly JetSmart in South America
American Airlines AAdvantage loyalty members now have an exciting new option for travel within South America. Travelers can use their AAdvantage points to book flights on JetSmart, a Chilean low-cost airline, directly through American’s website. This development marks a significant enhancement in the partnership between American Airlines and JetSmart, allowing AAdvantage members to redeem points for JetSmart flights, which previously required booking through the budget carrier’s own site.
The collaboration between American Airlines and JetSmart began four years ago when American acquired a 35.4% equity stake in the South American airline. As part of this partnership, JetSmart adopted AAdvantage as its loyalty program, creating a seamless connection for travelers looking to explore the region.
American Airlines has long held a dominant position in the South American market, operating the most flights to the continent among U.S. airlines. This strong presence dates back to 1990 when American purchased assets from the former Eastern Air Lines. As a result, American has established itself as a recognized brand across many South American countries, catering to a growing number of travelers in the region.
However, until now, AAdvantage members faced limitations when it came to booking intra-South America flights. The integration of JetSmart into the AAdvantage program changes that, allowing members to redeem points for flights within South America, not just for travel to and from the United States.
While this new redemption option is a welcome addition, there are a few important details to consider. Currently, travelers can only choose one fare option when booking JetSmart flights through American Airlines, which is fewer than the three fare options available on JetSmart’s website. Nonetheless, all points bookings made through American include perks such as a free checked bag, seat selection, and flexibility for flight changes or cancellations.
It’s also essential to note that redemptions are limited to JetSmart-only itineraries. This means that travelers cannot book trips that involve connections between American Airlines flights and JetSmart flights through the AAdvantage program.
A quick search on American Airlines’ website revealed that JetSmart flight redemptions are available starting in October. For instance, on October 24, travelers can book a domestic flight from Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport (SCL) to Andres Sabella Galvez International Airport (ANF) near Antofagasta for just 7,000 points. Alternatively, a flight from SCL to Ezeiza International Airport (EZE) near Buenos Aires on the same day costs 14,000 points.
In addition to redeeming points, AAdvantage members can also earn points on JetSmart flights, including Loyalty Points that contribute toward elite status within the AAdvantage program. This makes flying JetSmart not only a convenient option but also a way to enhance loyalty benefits.
As travelers look to explore the diverse landscapes and cultures of South America, this new redemption option opens up exciting possibilities. Whether you’re planning a quick getaway or an extended adventure, the ability to use AAdvantage points for JetSmart flights can help make your travel dreams a reality.
For those looking to maximize their travel experiences, consider exploring credit card options that can further enhance your earning potential. The right credit card can transform everyday spending into valuable rewards, whether in the form of cash back or travel experiences that might otherwise seem out of reach.
American Airlines’ integration with JetSmart is just one of the many ways airlines are adapting to meet the needs of their loyalty members. As travel continues to evolve, staying informed about new partnerships and redemption options can help you make the most of your travel experiences.
