Virgin Atlantic Launches Free Starlink Wi-Fi and Premium Upgrades

Virgin Atlantic has announced significant upgrades to its passenger experience, set to enhance travel for its customers. The U.K.-based airline will soon introduce free Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, expand its premium seating options, and undertake a long-awaited cabin retrofit, among other improvements.

The announcement was made at a special event in London, attended by frequent flyers, media representatives, and Virgin executives. Here’s what travelers can expect from these exciting developments.

One of the standout features of Virgin Atlantic’s upgrade is the introduction of free Starlink Wi-Fi, in partnership with Elon Musk’s SpaceX. This initiative will equip every aircraft in the Virgin fleet with Starlink radomes, enabling a high-speed streaming experience for all passengers, regardless of cabin class or the number of devices they bring on board. To access the Wi-Fi, travelers will simply need a Virgin Atlantic Flying Club loyalty account. The installation of Starlink technology is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2027.

Virgin Atlantic will become the first airline based in the U.K. to implement Starlink, joining a growing list of carriers worldwide that are enhancing their onboard connectivity. Airlines such as United and Hawaiian have also committed to integrating Starlink into their fleets, making free Wi-Fi a common offering among major airlines. While this move may diminish a revenue stream—considering Virgin currently charges around $25 for a full-flight Wi-Fi pass—it reflects the airline’s commitment to improving passenger experience.

As the aviation industry increasingly focuses on premium offerings, Virgin Atlantic is responding to the high demand for premium seats and services, particularly at London’s Heathrow Airport, which serves as the airline’s primary hub. To cater to this demand, Virgin Atlantic is investing heavily in its premium cabins.

The airline plans to introduce new layouts for its Airbus A330-900neo fleet, which will feature an increased number of Upper Class (business class) and Premium (premium economy) seats. Starting in the third quarter of next year, Virgin’s new A330s will boast more Upper Class pods, including additional Retreat Suites, which have proven popular since their introduction in 2022. In total, Virgin anticipates adding over 400 additional business-class seats daily on key routes to New York, Boston, Tampa, Miami, and Orlando.

While Virgin Atlantic will streamline its fleet to just three aircraft types—the Airbus A330neo, Airbus A350, and Boeing 787 Dreamliner—it has a history of adapting its configurations to meet varying demand. This includes a recent high-density layout for its Airbus A350, designed for popular leisure destinations.

In addition to the upgrades on the A330neo, Virgin Atlantic will also invest in retrofitting its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, starting in 2028. The current business-class product on these planes is outdated, and the upcoming retrofits will introduce significantly upgraded seating across all three cabin classes. This enhancement is particularly welcome for travelers who have experienced the less-than-ideal “coffin” pods that have been a staple of the Dreamliner.

Moreover, the new business-class product on the Dreamliner will draw inspiration from the upgraded seating on the A330neo, which features a customized version of the Thompson Vantage XL seat with sliding doors. This upgrade marks the first time Retreat Suites will be installed on the 787-9, expanding options for travelers seeking more space and comfort.

Virgin Atlantic is also refreshing its two most popular lounges, known as Clubhouses, in London and New York. The airline will invest millions to modernize these spaces, which are already highly regarded by premium travelers. While details remain scarce, enhancements are expected to elevate the overall lounge experience.

In addition to these major announcements, Virgin Atlantic will launch a new mobile app in December, aiming to improve the user experience. The airline is collaborating with OpenAI and Tomoro.ai to introduce a feature called Virgin Atlantic Concierge, allowing passengers to interact with an AI assistant for travel inquiries and assistance.

Furthermore, Virgin plans to introduce new loyalty tiers for its frequent flyers, rewarding those who demonstrate multi-year loyalty to the airline. Specific details about these tiers are forthcoming, but they may resemble lifetime status programs offered by U.S. airlines.

Lastly, Virgin Atlantic will update its amenity kits, or “goodie bags,” with products from the skincare brand Votary starting next year, further enhancing the travel experience for passengers.
